What is a Notary Public in Costa Rica?
In Costa Rica, a Notary Public (Notario Público) is an attorney with public certification powers — a Latin-type notarial system. The notary drafts public deeds, certifies contracts and documents, and records them with public registries. This is NOT the same as the Anglo-American 'notary public', who only verifies identities and witnesses signatures. If you are buying or selling property in Costa Rica, the sale must be granted as a public deed before a notary. We also offer this glossary in Portuguese.
