How to avoid falling victim to poor legal advice
Poor legal advice can cost you money, time and even the loss of a right. These four basic checks help you choose well.
First, verify the person is a licensed attorney: the Costa Rican Bar Association lets you confirm admission and a current license, and for notarial services, the National Notariat Directorate provides information on authorized notaries.
Second, distrust promises of outcome. No serious attorney guarantees winning a case or an exact timeline: the outcome depends on the specific case, the evidence and the authority's judgment. A good attorney explains risks and scenarios, not promises.
Third, ask for a clear explanation of stages and costs before starting: what procedures will follow, what registration or court fees will arise, and how the service will be billed.
Fourth, document everything in writing: agreements, scope and deliverables. Memory of a conversation is no substitute for a document.
